At first, The Elder Scrolls Online can seem complicated. However, with the right tips, you can quickly be successful in Tamriel. Here are important tips for people who are just starting to play.

1. Character selection & race/alliance

  • There are three alliances: Daggerfall Covenant, Aldmeri Dominion, and Ebonheart Pact. Your choice determines where you start and what happens at the beginning, but not what you can do overall.
  • Choose a race that has special abilities you like. It is not necessary to start perfectly, as the game offers a lot of freedom.
  • Do the tutorial and pay attention to special unlocks: you will receive your first mount at level 10 and your second weapon slot at level 15.

2. Basic Mechanics: Skills, Bars & Combat

  • When you reach level 15, you can obtain another weapon or weapon slot. This allows you to have two equipment sets and switch with the "^" key.
  • Understand the important combat techniques: light attack, heavy attack, block, bash (interrupt), and dodge roll.
  • Skills are unlocked when you use them, collect skill points, and complete daily tasks. Three "Skyshards" give you a skill point.

3. Leveling, Exploring & Questing

  • Engage with the main quests and the quests in specific areas. They not only tell a story but also provide knowledge and serve as a guide.
  • Use the "Group & Activity Finder" for daily dungeons or battlegrounds. This way, you will receive special rewards and a lot of XP.
  • Beginners can find good places to farm and level up, for example, in Greenshade, the Alik'r Desert, or Coldharbour.

4. Crafting, Inventory & Economy

  • Buy more items from the pack merchant to expand your inventory. In the morning, there is often not enough space.
  • It is good to work with your hands. Disassemble white items to improve your crafting lines. This includes blacksmithing, clothing, woodworking, and similar crafts.
  • Use buff food: They provide important advantages, sometimes even more than slightly better armor.

5. Guilds, Social & Comfort Features

  • You may be a member of up to five guilds at the same time. Use the guild finder to find a social or trading guild. This helps you if you are new.
  • Don't worry about your builds. Distribution of skills: You can later change your skill points and attribute points, for example with scrolls or a gold fee, so just have fun playing.

Tips for Beginners

  • At the beginning, it is important to focus on survival. Choose equipment that strengthens your health and resilience instead of just focusing on high damage.
  • Find waypoints in Tamriel early on to travel quickly.
  • You can join the Fighters Guild, Mages Guild, and the Undaunted early on to unlock important skill lines.
  • Discover “Wayshrines” so you can fast-travel later. If you teleport to a friend, unlocking a Wayshrine lets you fast-travel there freely.
